Contraception Spotlight: Female Sterilisation

If you’re certain that you don’t want any (or more) children, female sterilisation is a permanent method of contraception to consider. It’s a safe and effective option for those seeking long-term birth control.

We understand that this can be a sensitive topic for many people. Whether it’s a deeply personal choice or something you’re exploring with a partner, our team is here to support you with care, respect, and no judgment.

What Is Female Sterilisation?

Female sterilisation, also known as tubal ligation or having your ‘tubes tied’, is a surgical procedure that blocks or cuts the fallopian tubes. This prevents eggs from travelling from the ovaries to the uterus, thereby preventing pregnancy. The procedure is usually done under general anaesthetic and is considered permanent.

How Is It Done?

There are several methods:

  • Clipping – applying clips to block the tubes
  • Ringing – using a small loop or ring to constrict the tubes
  • Cutting and Tying – removing a small section and tying the ends

These are typically done via laparoscopy, a minimally invasive surgery using small incisions. The procedure is usually performed using a laparoscope inserted through a tiny cut in the abdomen.

Effectiveness

Female sterilisation is over 99% effective in preventing pregnancy, though no method is 100% guaranteed. There’s a very small risk (about 1 in 200) that the tubes can naturally rejoin over time.

Recovery and Aftercare

Most people go home the same day. Recovery usually takes a few days, though it’s recommended to avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activities for about a week.

Things to Consider

  • It’s permanent – While reversals exist, they are complex, costly, and not always successful.
  • No STI protection – Sterilisation only prevents pregnancy, not infections. Condoms are still recommended to protect against STIs.
  • Other options – Long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) like implants or IUDs offer similar effectiveness and are fully reversible.
