Services available at pharmacies

Some of your sexual health and contraception needs can be met through a local pharmacy, as well as Essex Sexual Health Service.

Contraception Pill

Most pharmacies now offer the contraception pill without an appointment. You can attend a pharmacy and say you would like to access the contraception pill, and you will be offered a consultation in a confidential meeting room. They may want to check your weight, height and blood pressure. If the pharmacist issues you the pill, they will let your GP know, but only with your permission to do so.

Emergency Hormone Contraception (EHC)

If you’ve had unprotected sex or a regular method of contraception has failed, you may be able to prevent getting pregnant by using emergency contraception. If you are age 13+ you can access this for free from ESHS, or also from some select pharmacies across Essex.

Use the map below to find a pharmacy offering EHC near you, we would always advise to ring the pharmacy ahead to ensure the pharmacist is in on the day to prevent a wasted journey. When you arrive at the pharmacy you will be taken into a private and confidential room with the pharmacist, who will assess your suitability for EHC.
