The Feed vs Real Life: Busting the Biggest Myths About Pornography

Whether you’ve stumbled across it, actively watch it, or are simply curious, pornography is more accessible than ever. With a few taps on a phone, anyone can view content that often looks polished, exciting and effortless.

But there’s one important thing to remember:

Porn is entertainment, not education.

Just like action films aren’t a guide to driving and reality TV isn’t an accurate picture of everyday life, pornography doesn’t reflect what real relationships or sex are usually like.

Let’s separate The Feed from Real Life by busting some of the most common myths.

Myth 1: “Everyone has sex like this.”

The Feed: Sex is always spontaneous, lasts for ages and everyone knows exactly what to do.

Real Life: Sex is often awkward, funny, communicative and different every time. People laugh, stop to talk, change positions, or decide they’re not in the mood. That’s completely normal.

Healthy sex isn’t about putting on a performance, it’s about feeling comfortable, safe and respected.

Myth 2: “Bodies should look a certain way.”

The Feed: Everyone has the “perfect” body.

Real Life: Bodies come in all shapes, sizes and appearances. Genitals, breasts, body hair and skin are all naturally different.

Comparing yourself to performers can lead to unrealistic expectations and knock your confidence. What you see online is often carefully selected, edited or enhanced.

Myth 3: “Consent doesn’t need to be discussed.”

The Feed: Everything happens without anyone talking about it.

Real Life: Consent is one of the most important parts of any sexual experience.

Consent means everyone freely agrees to what’s happening and can change their mind at any time. Checking in with each other isn’t awkward, it’s respectful.

Myth 4: “Sex should always look effortless.”

The Feed: Nobody gets nervous or embarrassed.

Real Life: People can feel shy, laugh, need breaks, or find things don’t go to plan. That’s all part of being human.

Real intimacy isn’t about getting everything “right”, it’s about trust, communication and enjoying the experience together.

Myth 5: “Porn teaches you about relationships.”

The Feed: Sex is the whole story.

Real Life: Healthy relationships are built on communication, respect, trust and mutual enjoyment.

Porn rarely shows conversations about contraception, STI testing, boundaries or emotions, but these are all important parts of real-life relationships.

Is watching porn bad?

Not necessarily.

For many adults, pornography can be something they choose to watch. However, if it’s becoming something you feel you need, is affecting your relationships, expectations, confidence, work or everyday life, it might be worth taking a step back and asking yourself why.

If you’re finding it difficult to cut down or it’s negatively affecting your wellbeing, support is available.

The bottom line

It’s okay to be curious, but it’s important to recognise the difference between entertainment and reality.

The Feed is designed to get clicks.

Real life is about communication, consent, respect and connection.

The more we understand that difference, the better equipped we are to build healthy relationships and make informed choices about our sexual health.
