Contraception Spotlight of the Month: LARC

Hey everyone! Summer is here, and so is our contraception spotlight of the month: Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC). LARC is a fantastic option for those looking for a reliable and low-maintenance method of birth control. Let’s dive into why LARC is becoming increasingly popular and why it might be the perfect choice for you.

Why Choose LARC?

One of the biggest advantages of LARC is its convenience. Unlike the daily pill, there’s no need to remember to take something every day. Once it’s in place, you can forget about it for months or even years! Plus, most types of LARC are over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy when administered correctly. However, remember that condoms are still the only contraception that protects against STIs, so it’s wise to use them alongside LARC.

Types of LARC

The Contraceptive Implant

The contraceptive implant is a small, flexible rod inserted under the skin of your upper arm. It releases a hormone called progestogen, which prevents pregnancy by:

  • Stopping egg release
  • Thickening cervical mucus to block sperm
  • Thinning the womb lining to prevent egg implantation

The best part? Once it’s in, you’re covered for three years!

The Intrauterine Device (IUD)

The IUD, or copper coil, is a small device made of copper and plastic placed in your womb. It releases copper, which:

  • Changes cervical mucus to block sperm
  • Prevents egg implantation

IUDs can last between 5-10 years and can even be used as emergency contraception.

The Intrauterine System (IUS)

Similar to the IUD, the IUS is a T-shaped plastic device inserted into your womb. It releases the hormone progestogen and works by:

  • Thickening cervical mucus
  • Thinning the womb lining
  • Sometimes preventing egg release

The IUS can be effective for 3-5 years, depending on the type.

The Contraceptive Injection

This injection, administered every 8-13 weeks, contains the progestogen hormone. It works by:

  • Thickening cervical mucus
  • Thinning the womb lining
  • Preventing egg release

When used correctly, the contraceptive injection is over 99% effective.

Finding the Right Choice for You

Choosing the right contraception is all about finding what works best for your body and lifestyle. Everyone is different, so what suits one person might not be perfect for another. Whether it’s the implant, IUD, IUS, or injection, LARC offers a range of options to fit your needs.
