STI Spotlight: Understanding HIV and the Support Available in Essex

At Essex Sexual Health Service, we believe that knowledge is power – especially when it comes to HIV. Whether you’re looking to protect yourself, support someone living with HIV, or simply stay informed, we’re here to provide accurate information and compassionate care.

What Is HIV?

HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a virus that weakens the immune system, making it harder for the body to fight infections. If HIV is left untreated, it will eventually turn into Late-Stage HIV, this is what was formally known as AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome). Whilst some people still use the term AIDS internationally or within medical communities, we like to refer to it as Late-Stage HIV due to advances in treatment and to reduce stigma that’s associated with the term “AIDS”. People who live with HIV can now manage their condition effectively and lead full health lives, and if they test early enough, will never receive a Late-Stage HIV diagnosis.

Why Testing Matters?

Many people with HIV may not experience symptoms for years, making regular testing crucial. Early detection allows for timely treatment, which not only improves health outcomes but also reduces the risk of transmission.

Essex Sexual Health Service offers free and confidential HIV testing options:

  • At-Home Testing Kits: Discreet kits delivered to your door.
  • In-Clinic Testing: Professional testing with rapid results.
  • Drop-In Clinics: No appointment needed – just walk in.

Breaking the Stigma

Stigma and misinformation can be significant barriers to testing and treatment. By educating ourselves and others, we can create a more supportive and understanding community.

Remember, effective treatment can suppress the virus to undetectable levels, meaning it cannot be transmitted to others – a concept known as “Undetectable = Untransmittable” (U=U).
